Riverboat Discovery - Web Hosting Services in Fairbanks, Alaska

About Our Professional Web Hosting Services

Our last day of tours is September 21, 2024. Tours will begin again in May of 2025! The Binkley family's steamboating tradition goes back over 100 years and five generations. In 1898, when Charles M. Binkley hiked over the Chilkoot Pass with other stampeders, he was not so much in search of gold as he was the chance to build and operate boats on the Yukon and its tributaries. He became a respected pilot and boat builder in the North. His son, Captain Jim Binkley, Sr., followed in his father's footsteps and piloted freight vessels on the Yukon and Tanana Rivers in the 1940's.

Customer Reviews & Testimonials

Krista Willey

We just moved to Fairbanks over the winter and did this tour when my parents visited! We also have a 10m old baby who went. It was really enjoyable, the crew was funny and I loved that they had people on the side (pilot, kennel, etc) that spoke and showed stuff while going past! Best boat tour I've been on. The salmon dip was amazing. Boat was big so even though there were a fair amount of people it wasn't crowded in the slightest. Glad we did it

Fun trip along the river on a paddle wheeler. Great commentary while we traveled the river. Saw sled dogs and stopped and got off the boat to tour native Alaskan village and learn about their culture.

Lesley Sinclair

Fantastic! So far this has been the highlight of our holiday. The tour was great, seeing the seaplane, learning about the Athabascan culture. There was a great sense of pride from every member of staff. Could not fault in anyway and would highly recommend to make this tour part of your itinerary.

A friend came up from the lower 48. I thought the Discovery was just one of the great ways of giving him a taste of Alaska. He loved it! This was my 3rd time. It was also great with JR Lewis as the narrator! Just another Fairbanks treasure.

A relaxing narrated ride with views of unique houses, an Iditarod dog training facility, and a recreation of indigenous living of the past. I didn't have expectations at the start and was thoroughly satisfied. Onboard concessions were reasonably priced. Free doughnuts, coffee, and tea.

Such a fun tour! We enjoyed learning about the sled dogs and the stop at the fishing village. It is always such a pleasure getting to learn about native culture, and we especially enjoyed that so many of the guides are young native kids - so glad they are getting to preserve their culture and share it with folks from all around the world. The boat ride itself was very relaxing and we enjoyed the narration - everything from the informative talks to the cheesy jokes, it was a fun ride! The boat has ample seating, free yummy donuts and coffee, and a gift shop + cafe! All in all, this was a very fun experience and we are glad we did it. It has something for everyone to enjoy.

Checking in was very simple with prepaid tickets. Explored the gift shop before getting on the boat I held back from purchasing too many souvenirs however I found as we made our way across the Alaska the prices at this gift shop were better and I wish I would've had purchased more. There were so many seats on the boat we were able to move around and see different views. Did not purchase any snacks, but did have the free donuts and coffee which were delicious. They also offered a sample of their salmon which was delicious. Had a person with low mobility in our party and it was easy for her to navigate on the bottom layer of the boat. She was able to climb the stairs, although they were slightly steep. The demonstration of the float plain was visible from the outside decks . Dog kennel stop we were able to witness sled run and hear a little bit about the dogs . Stopping off at the village, they split us into three groups and moved us in rotation around three sites and explained about village life of the native Americans that lived in the region . They had examples of that they used and every day items that they created from the land. The tour guides were very knowledgeable. They grew up around the area. This was the most informative tour we took on our trip to Alaska and well worth the half day we spent on this adventure .

This experience was such a delightful surprise. I came in with somewhat low expectations, and boy, was I wrong! At every level, this was a superb trip. Every person involved highly trained and pleasant. I would highly recommend it. Plus, their gift shop is the least expensive in all of Alaska. What a treat!
